May 2021 ResponsibleSteel Update

New ResponsibleSteel Constitution

Members will be aware of the process that has been put in place over the last year to develop a new Constitution for Steel Stewardship Council. That process resulted in the proposed new Constitution which was tabled at the AGM for approval by Members.

The consultation process that was undertaken as part of developing the proposed new Constitution ensured that each Member had an opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions on the Constitution, and where possible, all of those suggestions were included in the final version.

The new Constitution was adopted by members and you can find a copy of it in resources.

ResponsibleSteel GHG and Responsible Sourcing Consultation

As you will be aware, we are currently consulting on additional requirements for the responsible sourcing of input materials and for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The additional requirements will serve to identify and reward companies that are committed to creating a responsible steel value chain and that are minimising their CO2 emissions.

The original consultation was set to run for 30 days, ending on 19 May. Publishing these additional requirements has led to a lot of interest. We are responding to requests from many stakeholders to extend the consultation period to 60 days to give everyone the opportunity to study and respond to these documents in detail.

We are happy to announce that we are extending the consultation period to 19 June 2021.
The original workshops planned for 9 June will be rescheduled and new dates announced shortly.

Please find the documents on the resource page.

Due to the complex and detailed nature of these additional requirements, we have produced a slide-pack to help guide stakeholders through the proposed documents and outlining questions that we are asking stakeholders to consider. Please find this slide pack here.

The New ResponsibleSteel Board

Several changes to the makeup of our Board have taken place, partly due to some Board members moving to roles in new organisations. We took the opportunity, as part of the new Constitution, to develop the Board into a larger, more diverse Board who will be able to support the ResponsibleSteel Secretariat, and all of our members, deliver the ResponsibleSteel products and services to allow us to achieve our mission.

ResponsibleSteel has officially changed name

You may be aware that our official name for the last 4 years has been Steel Stewardship Council Ltd. We wanted to officially change our name to match the name that we have been using externally and that you all know us by – ResponsibleSteel.

This Resolution was adopted by members.
