The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) Joins ResponsibleSteel™

London, November 26th, 2017

ResponsibleSteel™ is delighted to welcome the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) as a ResponsibleSteel™ Associate.

MAC established its Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) programme in 2004, with the objective of enabling mining companies to meet society’s needs for minerals, metals and energy products in the most socially, economically and environmentally responsible way.

Matthew Wenban-Smith, ResponsibleSteel™ Executive Director welcomes the association with MAC and the TSM programme:
“The responsible sourcing of the raw materials for steelmaking is a fundamental component of the ResponsibleSteel™ programme. We believe that the most effective way to achieve this is to work with existing initiatives, rather than to duplicate their work. We very much look forward to developing our relationship with the TSM programme to implement this approach over the coming years.”

Ben Chalmers, MAC’s Vice-President of Sustainable Development, responsible for the implementation of the TSM programme, said: “We are looking forward to future discussions with ResponsibleSteel™ and its multi-stakeholder membership and exploring how TSM and ResponsibleSteel™ can add value and support responsible standards along the whole supply chain. We believe that the TSM programme has a lot to offer in terms of the responsible sourcing of ore, metallurgical coal and other mined materials used for steel making.”

Steel making is one of the biggest markets for MAC members, as well as for TSM’s associate programme members in other countries.
