ResponsibleSteel offers two certification pathways: Core Site Certification and Certified Steel. Core Site Certification is the first step and assesses sites against more than 300 requirements covering key environmental, social, and governance topics such as pollution, biodiversity, labour rights, water stewardship, and community impacts. Achieving Core Site Certification requires corporate-level commitment and full-site alignment.

Certified Steel builds on this foundation by requiring sites to meet Progress Level criteria for both decarbonisation and responsible materials sourcing. Sites that reach at least Progress Level 1 for both areas can market their output as “Certified Steel.” These Progress Levels reward continuous improvement and drive industry-wide transition toward responsible, near-zero steel production.
