Introduction to ResponsibleSteel
A summary of ResponsibleSteel’s role as a global multi-stakeholder initiative driving the socially and environmentally responsible production of steel.
Heading

ResponsibleSteel is a global, not-for-profit organisation created to maximise steel’s contribution to a sustainable world. The steel industry is essential to society and the clean-energy transition, yet it generates around 10% of global energy-related emissions and faces challenges across labour rights, biodiversity, water stewardship, community impacts, and pollution.
The initiative brings together steelmakers, buyers, NGOs, unions, and other actors in a multi-stakeholder platform, fostering cooperation across the entire value chain. ResponsibleSteel develops independent, credible standards aligned with ISEAL Codes of Good Practice, defining expectations across 13 ESG Principles. Certification against the Production Standard creates a pathway from Core Site Certification to progressively higher standards, culminating in near-zero steel with full traceability.
